There is no better way to bring life to your home than with a new coat of paint. That’s why we’re providing you with seven helpful interior painting tips. Doing things correctly can make your projects go faster and smoother. But if you really want a nicely done, professional-looking finish, you can hire interior house painters.
1. Try Samples First
It’s hard to predict how a particular color will look like on your wall. One practical way to solve this problem is to buy sample pints, bring them home, then test them out. This will help you determine how a color will look on a large area much better than a swatch can ever provide. It is much better to spend a few dollars on a sample rather than buying gallons of paint only to find out later that the color won’t work.
2. Surface Preparation
Before applying primer or paint, the surface of the wall or ceiling must be dry. To remove dirt and dust, use a damp cloth. The paint might not bond or flatten as it should if the drywall surface is wet, dirty, or dusty.
Ensure that the ambient temperature is not too low. Cold temperatures hinder the paint’s ability to bond and coalesce. The air, surface, and paint should be within the recommended temperature (usually above 40 degrees F).
3. Clean Dirty Areas Before Painting
If you paint over a dirty or oily surface, the paint will likely chip or peel off easily. To prevent this from happening, clean dirty areas with a cleaner intended for pre-paint cleaning. You can buy these cleaners at paint stores or home centers. To be safe, wear rubber gloves and eye protection.
Put some cleaner in a lint-free cloth and wipe using a circular motion. When the surface is already clean, fill in any nicks or holes, and sand them before painting. This will improve the adhesion of the new paint.
4. Rollers Can Save You Time and Effort
A roller might involve more equipment when compared to brushes, but it’s worth it since you’ll get more done in less time. By adding an extension pole to the roller, you will be able to reach further (e.g. the ceiling), without moving too much.
5. Primer
The primer is the first coat of paint which serves as an intermediary between the drywall and top coat. It helps provide a uniform surface for painting. When a primer is used, the top coat is applied to the primer, not the drywall. You can think of it as a “foundation” for an attractive and smooth interior paint job. The primer also prevents brush/roller marks on the top coat.
The objective of applying primer is to create a surface with uniform absorption. The polymer particles bond easily, regardless of surface they are applied to. However, drywall primer isn’t as durable as paint. Its main function is to create an even surface for paint.
6. Mix Paint in a Large Bucket
Paint color can slightly vary from one can to the next. To avoid this, use the process called “boxing” – estimate the amount of paint you will need and mix it in a five-gallon bucket. For larger jobs, use the bucket and roller screen instead of a roller tray. It is quicker to load the roller with the screen than a roller pan. Dunk the roller in the paint bucket and roll it along the screen until it stops dripping.
7. Top Coat
The top coat is the last coat of paint that is applied to the surface. Stir the paint and apply the recommended thickness of wet top coat. Back-roll the paint and measure the mil thickness to ensure the correct dry-paint thickness. Depending on the paint selected, applying 2 lighter top coats can provide a more durable and higher quality finish than applying one heavy topcoat.
