1-2 Weeks Before
Finalize your colors. Last-minute changes after materials are purchased cost time and money. Our color consultation guide can help. Identify problem areas. Walk each room and note nail pops, cracks, water stains, or peeling paint. Point these out during the pre-job walkthrough. Arrange for kids and pets. Paint fumes and open equipment create safety concerns. Plan for them to be out of the work zone.
2-3 Days Before
Remove wall decor. Take down all pictures, mirrors, shelves, clocks, and curtain rods. Put hardware in labeled ziplock bags taped to each item. This is the single most helpful thing you can do. Clear small items and valuables. Remove everything from nightstands, dressers, bookshelves, and countertops. Relocate electronics. Desktop computers, gaming consoles, and networking gear should be moved away from walls.
The Night Before
Move furniture to room center — 3-foot clearance from every wall saves significant masking time. Remove switch plates and outlet covers — takes 2 minutes per room, saves your painters 10 minutes per room. Quick-clean the walls — damp cloth removes dust and cobwebs. Kitchen walls near the stove need extra attention for grease. Clear driveway space for the crew's work vehicle.
Morning Of
Walk the project with your lead painter. Confirm colors, discuss concerns, establish communication preferences. 10 minutes upfront prevents misunderstandings later.
